When God Left the Classroom

Tenscore and many years ago, our Fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in free speech and dedicated to the proposition that God should never cross state lines. Of course, the great Abraham Lincoln never said any such thing.  But when you think about it, it is really not as preposterous as it sounds. When we baby-boomers were kids, we started each and every day of our elementary-school education with a nondenominational prayer.  It felt so safe, so familiar, so secure.  It was simply a statement that Something in this world was bigger than we were and that Someone up there was watching over us.  Being nondenominational, no mention was made of what each child called a Father in heaven.  To a little kid in elementary school, it didn't matter.  Each child knew what the Deity was called in his or her life, and this prayer was simply an extension of what kids were taught at home.
