Trump proves his troll master status by making 'Russia helping Bernie' allegations

Friday morning, the media had their big story: the Russians were once again helping Donald Trump.  They believed this story despite the fact that Trump has been a nightmare for the Russians, destroying their economy and arming their enemies.  By Friday afternoon, the story had been debunked.  However, the report that the Russians are helping Bernie is still out there, and Trump is using it to great effect.

Regarding the allegation that Russia was helping Trump, on Sunday, CNN finally confessed that the whole thing was a Deep State effort to discredit Trump.  CNN didn't use those particular words, but it doesn't take much effort to read between the lines:

The US intelligence community's top election security official appears to have overstated the intelligence community's formal assessment of Russian interference in the 2020 election, omitting important nuance during a briefing with lawmakers earlier this month, three national security officials told CNN.

The official, Shelby Pierson, told lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election with the goal of helping President Donald Trump get reelected.

The US intelligence community has assessed that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election and has separately assessed that Russia views Trump as a leader they can work with. But the US does not have evidence that Russia's interference this cycle is aimed at reelecting Trump, the officials said.

"The intelligence doesn't say that," one senior national security official told CNN. "A more reasonable interpretation of the intelligence is not that they have a preference, it's a step short of that. It's more that they understand the President is someone they can work with, he's a dealmaker."

It seems that Pierson's reputation is such that anyone listening to her should have taken what she said with a grain of salt:

That story may be dead and gone, but a more interesting one is the report that the Russians are seeking to help Bernie Sanders.  The Trump administration, foregoing its predecessor's habit of spying on presidential candidates who may be on the receiving end of Russian shenanigans, dutifully notified Bernie about the report that Russia was pushing his campaign.

That was a month ago.  However, the story broke to the public last week, right before the Democrat debate in Nevada, when establishment Democrats were getting very worried about Bernie's polling numbers.  Bernie dutifully issued a statement disavowing Russia (and he was probably honest about it too for, while he adored Soviet Russia, he doesn't seem to care much about oligarchic Russia).

On Sunday, Trump publicly accused Adam "Shifty Pencil Neck" Schiff, as well as other Democrats, of having leaked that information to the media:

Nobody said it. I read where Russia is helping Bernie Sanders. Nobody said it to me at all. Nobody briefed me about that at all.

[snip]

They leaked it, Adam Schiff and his group, they leaked it to the papers and, as usual, they ought to investigate Adam Schiff for leaking that information. He should not be leaking information out of intelligence. They ought to investigate Adam Schiff.

Trump's brilliant trolling revealed itself in his next statement, when he did everything he could to sow dissent within the already fractured Democrat Party:

What it could be is you know the Democrats are treating Bernie Sanders very unfairly and it sounds to me like a leak from Adam Schiff because they don't want Bernie Sanders to represent them. It sounds like it's '16 all over again for Bernie Sanders.

And he won. He had a great victory yesterday, but you know what happening, you can see the handwriting on the wall.

[snip]

I think so, unless they cheat him out of it. Bernie is looking more and more like he'll be the nominee unless they cheat him out of it. A lot of people thought he was going to be nominee last time but it didn't work out. I think they're watching it very closely.

Watching Trump toy with the Democrats has become a source of almost endless pleasure.  For that ability alone, he deserves a place in the pantheon of great American presidents.
