Jorge Ramos grills Biden about the immigrant kids Obama’s administration locked up

In 2014, when word spread throughout Latin America that the Obama administration was inclined to be lenient with children who arrived illegally in America, parents anxious to get their children out of impoverished, crime-ridden countries sent them north on their own, in the company of other children, or with paid smugglers. With tens of thousands of children surging across the border, local border enforcement was reduced to packing kids into rooms without beds or putting them behind wire fences.

The photos that emerged from that time were sad because these were children, and anger-inducing because they showed how the Obama administration had turned America’s southern border into a joke. The only people getting upset about the overwhelming numbers of children suffering this way, though, were conservatives. The mainstream media didn’t focus on the Obama cages; it focused on the pathetic children being deprived of the American experience thanks to cruel Republicans.

Once Trump became president, having run in part on a platform that included shutting down the porous southern border to illegal aliens, Democrats and their progressive fellow travelers began recirculating the photos. However, instead of acknowledging that the photos represented Obama-era policies, leftists contended that they showed Trump policies.

It now appears that Biden, despite having been in the White House when Obama was locking Latin American kids in cages, bought into this historical revisionism. How else can one explain his disastrous interview on Friday with Univision’s Jorge Ramos?

In the interview, despite the plethora of photos showing children in cages in 2014, Jorge Ramos managed to dig up a single photograph of an unaccompanied boy and asked Biden to explain how that happened.

Biden, clearly relaxed, gave his rap about what happened:

What happened was all the unaccompanied children were coming across the border. We tried to get them out, we kept them safe, and get them out of the detention center *** that are run by Homeland Security and get them into communities as quickly as we can.

At this point, Ramos, instead of doing the polite thing and moving on now that he had an answer, no matter how vapid, doubled down instead: “Many people would say they were cages,” he insisted.

Figuring that the best defense is a good offense, Biden accused Ramos of lying. “Look,” he said, “you know you’re not telling the truth here about the comparison of the two things [i.e., Obama’s record versus Trump’s record].”

To Biden’s manifest dismay, Ramos kept going, pointing out that, while Trump had detained more children, the fact remained that Obama still locked them up too.

The difference, according to Biden, was that the Obama administration had pure motives. “Look how quickly we got them out and got them back to families,” he said. “Look at how . . . we sought the relatives here, we sought to get them into safe communities. We sought to get them out of the control of Homeland Security to get them safe, but they came unaccompanied. Unaccompanied.”

However, Beth Bauman reports that Biden’s version isn’t true either:

The former vice president seems to have forgotten that a Senate report found that "an unknown number of Central American migrant children [were placed} into the custody of human traffickers after neglecting to run the most basic checks on these so-called 'caregivers'" during the Obama administration, the Intelligencer reported.

Biden then boasted that he helped keep people in Latin America by leading an initiative to send $750 million to Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador so that the situation was better in those countries.

Ramos cut into Biden’s boasting to say, “I remember that. They kept on coming.”

“No, they didn’t,” snapped Biden, pointing an angry finger at Ramos. “They dropped off extensively. Extensively!”

When Ramos pointed out that the number of children crossing the border surged again after the drop-off, Biden promptly blamed Trump for failing to continue to send money to Latin America.

The interview revealed that four years after Obama left office, Biden assumed he could still ride on Obama’s coattails. Instead, Obama, by refusing to endorse Biden, has snatched those coattails away and has left Biden with nothing more than Obama’s record of failures and hypocrisy on which to run.
