Can Chelsea Manning be pardoned for crimes committed while 'she' was a man?
Chelsea Manning, who as Bradley Manning was convicted of espionage and aiding the enemy, is requesting that President Obama pardon "her" for "her" crimes and release "her" from jail. But liberals would agree that Chelsea committed these crimes as a man and maintains that he is a woman now. So, by their logic, how can Manning be pardoned for acts committed when he was a completely different gender, basically a completely different person?
Meanwhile, despite his unhappiness, it seems as though Chelsea is at least enjoying some aspects of his situation in prison, enjoying his newly grown breasts, snug sports bras, and festive games of Dungeons and Dragons.
During the day, Ms. [sic] Manning, who was an Army intelligence analyst known as Bradley Manning when she [sic] disclosed archives of secret military and diplomatic files to WikiLeaks in 2010, builds picture frames and furniture in the prison wood shop. In the evenings, before the 10:05 p.m. lockdown, she [sic] reads through streams of letters, including from antisecrecy enthusiasts who view her [sic] as a whistle-blower.
... She [sic] can now wear female prison undergarments, including a sports bra, and "subdued cosmetics." In early 2015, she [sic] was permitted to get speech therapy to feminize the tone and pitch of her [sic] voice and began cross-sex hormone therapy prescribed, [Manning's lawyer] said, by an endocrinologist brought in from the military's Walter Reed hospital.
Since then, Ms. [sic] Manning wrote, she [sic] has developed breasts and curvier hips. "There have been significant changes since I've been taking the hormones, and I am happy with them," she [sic] said.
... For a time, Ms. [sic] Manning played Dungeons & Dragons with a few fellow inmates[.]
Not everything has been great for Mr. Manning, of course; he has tried to kill himself several times and was alarmed when his guards were briefly replaced with Arab secret agents. He has also been denied permission to cut off his penis, which upsets him greatly, and is understandable – what woman wants to have a penis hanging around?
Questions for discussion:
1) Could Obama issue two pardons for Manning, one for each gender?
2) If Mr. Manning played a male character in Dungeons and Dragons, could it be said that he was a man pretending to be a woman pretending to be a man again?
3) If Mr. Manning is permitted to grow longer hair, do you think he will no longer feel like a "freak and a weirdo"?
4) If the media constantly told us it's normal to walk on your head and hands, not your feet, would most people eventually believe that walking on your head and hands is normal?
