The frenenemies in the White House damn Hillary Clinton with faint praise

Hillary Clinton’s bumbling and foolish (and amateurish) response to her email problems continues to take its toll on her. Not only have her popularity ratings plummeted but calls are increasing for other Democrats to start mounting campaigns (Elizabeth Warren, Martin O’Malley). These alternative candidates will probably not gain much traction, but the White House is not helping Hillary much these days.  Josh Earnest was asked about this controversy by MSNBC’s Kassie Hunt.

The White House says it’s time for Hillary Clinton to be recognized for requesting the State Department release the emails that she personally handed back to the department from her private home server.

During an inaugural Meerkat interview with MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt, the White House Press Secretary explained that Clinton “deserves some credit” for the way she handled her emails.

“The standard that Secretary Clinton was held to in terms of retaining her emails and making them public is certainly higher than you would expect of a private sector CEO,” Josh Earnest said. “But again that also is why Secretary Clinton deserves some credit for asking the State Department to release all of her emails.”

Some credit? If Earnest were a Republican, he would be criticized for condescending opinions towards women and for misogyny. Aside from that issue, this is another example of the White House standing aside and letting Hillary stew in her own juices. Earnest --as all flacks are -- gets his position by being very careful with his words. The qualifier “some” could easily have been dropped but was not.  Obama is vindictive; he remembers every slight, whether real or perceived (and he is very thin-skinned and adolescent). He nurtures grievances. He remembers Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton as political opponents and would prefer she not succeed him. On that we agree.
