ISIS Hostage Peter Kassig, next in line for execution, is a Muslim convert
American aid worker Peter Kassig has been designated as next in line for beheading by ISIS in the video released Friday of the execution of British hostage Alan Henning. However, unlike the previous beheaded hostages, Kassig has taken the Muslim faith and a new name: Abdul-Rahman Kassig.
Evidently, this is not enough for ISIS. Yesterday, Kassig’s parents, who deserve every iota of sympathy, released an unbearably sad video pleading for their son’s release in part on the grounds that he is a fellow Muslim, as well as on the basis of his humanitarian work.
In addition, they released a public statement:
“As Muslims around the world, including our son Abdul-Rahman Kassig, celebrate Eid al-Adha, the faith and sacrifice of Ibrahim, and the mercy of Allah, we appeal to those holding our son to show the same mercy and set him free,” the Kassig parents said….
In the video, Paula Kassig addressed her son in a personal message that she said she hoped he would see.
“We are so very proud of you and the work you have done to bring humanitarian aid to the Syrian people,” she said.
Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch is not optimistic that the Kssigs’ gestures toward accommodation of Islam will be of much effect on the ISIS jihadis:
…they mention his conversion to Islam and refer to him by his Muslim name, but unlike the mother of another hostage, Shirley Sotloff, they do not presume to lecture the jihadis about Islam. The scarf that Mrs. Kassig is wearing over her head may be an oblique gesture of good will to the jihadis, but as much of her hair remains uncovered, it is unlikely to be regarded with anything but contempt.
The appeal to Abdul-Rahman Kassig’s humanitarian work is unlikely to move the jihadis. They don’t care about that at all. They only care about advancing Islam. If they decide that Abdul-Rahman Kassig’s severed head would serve Islam as a useful warning to the Infidels, then severed his head will be.
Alas, I fear Spencer is correct.
