Michelle Gone Wild: First Lady Targets White Potatoes and Republicans

Michelle Obama won’t rest until we are all scrounging for berries and chomping leafy vegetation in the forest.  Or until she and her fellow progressives regulate the entire food industry Soviet-style.

Four years and $12 billion later, her campaign to replace French fries and pizza with green pepper strips and Mexican turnip roots in school cafeterias has tanked.  Kids in Kentucky said the food tasted like "vomit."  Students in California were selling chips and candy bars on the black market.  Lunch ladies and food service workers report that the K-12 crowd would rather skip meals than eat kale.  Kids dumped mystery meat into trash cans faster than Michelle dumped patients at the University of Chicago Medical Center.  More than 500 schools have already opted out to get away from federal regulations and Michelle’s constant nitpicking.

So why are the little ones trashing the government-sanctioned slop?

According to the First Lady, Republicans and white potatoes are to blame for the program’s failure.

Speaking to a group of school nutrition officials on Tuesday, Michelle accused House members of playing politics with children’s health.  An agriculture spending bill approved by a House subcommittee last week would allow schools to waive the standards if they have a net loss on school food programs for a six-month period.  Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., wrote the bill after being deluged with complaints from school food directors.

In the same speech, Michelle, like all progressives in the grip of a fanatical agenda, let us know that her legacy is not about to totter because a few dissenters won’t get with the program.

Transforming the health of an entire generation is no small task.  But we have to be willing to fight the hard fight now.

Mrs. Obama is right about one thing.  It is no small task for the federal government to pry open the jaws of 50 million students and force-feed them rock-hard chicken nuggets while her daughters chow down on Philly Cheese Steaks at Sidwell Friends.

On Wednesday Michelle continued to scapegoat Congress and push her imperial food plan.  In a New York Times op-ed, Mrs. Obama attacked white potatoes.  She backed up her antagonism with recommendations from the Institute of Medicine.  IOM is a far left quasi-government agency masquerading as an objective, non-profit scientific entity.  IOM specifically lists universal health coverage as one of its five principles and is funded in part by the far-left Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

In 2010, the Institute said that potatoes should not be part of the Women, Infants and Children program, known as WIC.  Under an interim rule, the USDA agreed to bar WIC participants from buying white potatoes with their federal dollars.  The attack on spuds roused growers to defend their crop.  They insisted that potatoes are filled with potassium and vitamin C, and one farmer in Washington State began a 60-day all-potato diet in protest of the rule.

Michelle has now criticized Congress for wanting to challenge the 2010 rule by including white potatoes to the WIC list of approved foods.

From the New York Times:

…the House of Representatives is considering a bill to override science by mandating that white potatoes be included on the list of foods that women can purchase using WIC dollars. Now, there is nothing wrong with potatoes.

The problem is that many women and children already consume enough potatoes and not enough of the nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables they need. That’s why the Institute of Medicine — the nonpartisan, scientific body that advises on the standards for WIC — has said that potatoes should not be part of the WIC program.

Congress in conflict with modern science?  Women and children have consumed enough potatoes?  How does she know?

Mrs. Obama’s inordinate need to shape people from cradle to grave spares her the tedious business of dealing with reality.  It is hardly the Republican-led Congress that has exposed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 debacle, but rather the loud complaining of unionized school administrators, students, and cafeteria workers across this great country – many of whom are members of her own party.

So what is to be done with this kind of semi-literate propaganda?  Well, we could take Mrs. Obama’s advice and “fight.”  All liberty-loving Americans should eat lots of mashed white potatoes,  tater tots, and French fries.  Public school kids should stage sit-ins against the first lady’s hyper-regulations and gastro-fascism.  Taxpayers should demand their money back.
