Why do gun control advocates continue to reveal their ignorance about guns?

A couple of days ago, we saw Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette make a fool of herself talking about bullets and magazines. Now we have the president himself saying that the children murdered at Newtown were gunned down by a "fully automatic weapon."

President Obama told a group of Democratic donors Wednesday night that the children killed in the Newtown, Conn. attack last December were shot with a "fully automatic weapon."

Speaking to donors at a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraiser in San Francisco, Obama urged the need for "gun control," and referred for the first time to an alleged "fully automatic weapon" involved in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults.

From the White House transcript (emphasis added):

Now, over the next couple of months, we've got a couple of issues:  gun control.  (Applause.)  I just came from Denver, where the issue of gun violence is something that has haunted families for way too long, and it is possible for us to create common-sense gun safety measures that respect the traditions of gun ownership in this country and hunters and sportsmen, but also make sure that we don't have another 20 children in a classroom gunned down by a semiautomatic weapon - by a fully automatic weapon in that case, sadly."

ABC News reported that the shooter, Adam Lanza, "killed all 26 victims inside Sandy Hook Elementary School with a Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle before taking his own life with a Glock 10 mm handgun."

Neither weapon is an automatic weapon, which would continuously fire bullets with a single pull of the trigger.

It is illegal to convert a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic weapon unless you jump through ATF hoops - an expensive process designed to discourage the practice. That is what you would have to do to make the Bushmaster into a fully automatic weapon because it is sold as a semi-automatic rifle. Automatic guns have been banned since the 1930's. Doesn't the president know the law?

And Bryan Preston at PJ Media pointed this out:

Our president also said this, about half the country, last night.

I want to find some common-sense gun safety legislation that we can get done. And I do believe that there are well-meaning Republicans out there who care about their kids just as passionately as we do.

Because you disagree with him and have some problems with the laws he wants passed, you don't care about your kids as passionately as some rich leftist who's donating to his Democrat Party and cluelessly listening to him say things about the tragedy he is exploiting that aren't even true.

What a sick, dishonest and ill-informed little man Barack Obama is.

And Ann Coulter in a tweet:

Liberals talk about guns like they talk about Christianity, not terribly familiar with either. - http://bit.ly/XrrC2R

Do liberals realize that most gun owners are laughing at them?
