The Phoenix Suns will wear "Los Suns" on their jerseys in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, owner Robert Sarver said, "to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation."The decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics.
"Los Suns" is a marketing ploy, and an obvious Anglo-derived one at that. If they wanted to spell the team's name out on the jerseys in proper Spanish, it would be "Los Soles". But leave it to the NBA to act like they're celebrating the Latin community buy just throwing the definite article, "los" in front of the team name.
What a disgrace.
I'm tired of these multi-millionaire and billionaire figures in the world of entertainment and sports acting like they really care about those who are deemed the less-fortunate.
In this particular case, I rather they just play basketball and keep their phony political views to themselves, especially when it's obvious they are ignorant to the subject they choose to opine about.
