April 20, 2010 'The Beholden State'
Steve Malanga writing in City Journal:
The camera focuses on an official of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), California's largest public-employee union, sitting in a legislative chamber and speaking into a microphone. "We helped to get you into office, and we got a good memory," she says matter-of-factly to the elected officials outside the shot. "Come November, if you don't back our program, we'll get you out of office.' The piece is long but well worth the read. It sums up what America is rapidly becoming; a two tiered nation with those working for government getting fantastic salaries and benefits while those of us in the private sector get less because government must take an ever increasing share of wealth to pay public employees. The vicious circle - government unions donate millions to state legislators who, in turn, pass new programs guaranteed to increase the size of the unionized government workforce, which means more dues for the unions to spend on electing more politicians who do their bidding. Is it any wonder we're in a world of hurt? Hat Tip: Ed Lasky |
