October 21, 2008 Wall Street Journal: Obama 'Nonsense' on tax cuts
Not that this is going to get any play beyond a few conservative sites but it is still a devastating indictment of Obama's tax plan.
William McGurn in the Wall Street Journal: Now we know: 95% of Americans will get a "tax cut" under Barack Obama after all. Those on the receiving end of a check will include the estimated 44% of Americans who will owe no federal income taxes under his plan. As McGurn points out, Goolsbee is not being entirely honest. In fact, those who pay no income taxes will have indeed receive a check based on their payroll taxes which will affect how much is being paid into the Social Security Trust Fund: You have to admire the audacity. With one touch of the Obama magic, what otherwise would be described as taking money from Peter to pay Paul is now transformed into Paul's tax relief. Where a tax cut for payroll taxes paid will not in fact come from payroll taxes. And where all these plans come together under the rhetorical umbrella of "Making Work Pay." Independent contractors such as myself will receive the least because our taxes are figured a little differently. No matter, a scheme is a scheme and I wonder if someone will point all this out to the Messiah before he prematurely bankrupts Social Security. |
