Instant bailout: pick a number, any large number. Use your lucky number if you'd like, add a few zeroes and voila! that's how much you need for the bailout, for the economy to be just dandy again according to this scary report in Forbes.
In fact, some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy.
"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."
The rest of the plan is apparently based on as much thin air as the thinking that got us into this crisis. Frightening symmetry.
