Knife control in Britain

Richard Baehr
A friend visiting London tells us about the obvious and inevitable lesson being learned about gun control efforts.  Once again. It isn't the weapon, it is the person who is the problem. He writes:

Stabbings dominate the news here.  If you replaced stabbings with shootings, I would have thought I was in Chicago.

Actually, London now has a much higher crime rate than most major American cities. Take out murder, and it is higher in all virtually every other category.

So the Brits are now actually pushing knife control as a solution to the problem of violent impulses among their populace.

And next they will ban windows so people can't be pushed out of them...

Funny, in places where gun ownership is commonplace or even encouraged, people seem to be much better at controlling those violent impulses..

Wait a minute, I thought that crime in general and murder in particular was a specific condition of the U.S.!

Are you going to tell me that those high minded Europeans have similar or worse problems??

This HAS TO BE George Bush's fault!!

It is so much easier to go after an inanimate object than to address the real problem.
Will this knife ban also cover areas under Sharia law?

I'm just sayin'...

After they take away all the knives how the hell are you going to enjoy a good steak? Criminals will turn to sharpened spoons next to do their dirty deeds with. Can't wait for that headlines. "Man dies from wounds suffered from a Spoon attack.."

Good thing they don't play baseball over there (although the do play cricket, which uses a bat), otherwise they'd next ban baseball bats!!! Then of course there are FORKS!!! Cut out your heart with a spoon?

Willi

They should try criminal control, more jails, less crime.

Next thing you know they will have to ban cricket bats, because that is what the bad people will use next! Then broken bottles, big rocks, screwdrivers and water pipes. They need to get a grip here. nearly anything can be used as a weapon in the wrong hands. thank god I live in the US.

They're just going the way of Australia. The Aussies followed Britain's lead in banning guns (thanks in no small part to the efforts of Rebecca Peterson, who is now leading the UN charge for world-wide gun control). The Aussies then went a step further by banning SWORDS! I suppose their sword-involved homicide rate skyrocketed when the criminals turned in all their guns...
Britain, several years ago, actually deliberated banning knives with points due to increased stabbings with butcher and steak knives. According to their "conventional" wisdom, only occupations such as chefs had both the need and the "training" to own and use pointed knives.
Those who pay attention to such trends are the ones so adamantly opposed to gun control, of any sort, rightly fearing the continuing erosion of not only the right to self defense, but other freedoms as well. I personally feel that free speech is at much at risk today as the RTKBA.

When I lived in Israel, I got used to seeing guns in public. Open carry is the norm. After a short time serving on a kibbutz, I was even allowed to carry one openly, though I am neither Jewish nor even a citizen. I regularly hitch-hiked while openly carrying a firearm. Never had trouble picking up a ride.

When I read this article, a thought came to mind so I googled "homicide rates by nation." I perused five studies, but nowhere does Israel even appear in the top 60 most violent nations for murder. I did discover one report claiming that Israel is the 5th safest nation for homicide. Go figure.

PLEASE tell me you are joking. I know you're not, but please tell me so, anyway.
I guess at first they will only regulate or ban sharp-ended knives to prevent stabbings. Then there will be an rise in slashing attacks, and next thing you know there will be calls to regulate everything except butter knives. By the end of it all, even sharpening stones will be regulated.

First they grabbed guns from the British citizenry. Now, they're trying to control knives. It takes the intellect of a three-year-old to understand that anything you can hold in your hand can be a weapon. I guess that's beyond those who want to disarm their nation just that little bit more.

Even after they've taken my guns and knives, I'll still have my teeth. And if they drag me to the dentist, I'll gum them to death.

Time to update that old adage "If knives are outlawed only outlaws will have knives."

You know, England, if you were to ban solid food, not only would be no need for knives, there would be no need for forks with their dangerous, pointy tines! You could also mandate the removal of everyone's teeth so that there will be no biting! And think of the money you'll save on your universal health care! And imagine Prince Charles giving a speech! Oh wait, never mind...he's an elite.
Spoons, gums, and applesauce! For a safe England!

Gun control is the leftist paradigm. A tiny elite knows what is best for each of us, orders us to obey, and then enforces the order.
And this without regard to what we want. And it hardly ever works--how could it considering the complexity of the human condition. But they NEVER learn!!

Oh, please note that in my previous post, I managed to avoid using the slogan, "For the safety of England, give peas a chance!" It wasn't easy to resist; I hope you can appreciate that!

The people of Great Britain should perhaps consider the "weapons free" societies that we currently have in the U.S. The population of these communities are strictly prohibited from possessing firearms, knives, or weapons of any kind. These oases of peace and tranquility are none other than our Nation's prisons. There the most brutal predators reign over weaker inmates, beating, raping and even killing other prisoners in a gun- and knife-free paradise. I am not advocating arming prisoners, of course, but merely pointing out that modeling society in general after the image and likeness of our penitentaries, i.e. putting law-abiding citizens at the mercy of the depraved in the name of "safety" is not conducive to security; on the contrary, it borders upon madness. The truth of the matter is that there is nothing noble about weakness, nor is strength the equivalent of violence.

They so stupid, just so pathetically stupid.

It's hard to believe that Britain was once the most powerful nation on the planet.

How sad. I am now embarrassed to be part of the British common wealth. I want out.

Idiots writing and passing "weapons" control laws are big in Canada.

all of the following are banned in Canada:
• "nunchaku" and any similar instrument or device, being hard non-flexible sticks, clubs, pipes or rods linked by a length or lengths of rope, cord, wire or chain;
• "shuriken", being a hard non-flexible plate having three or more radiating points with one or more sharp edges in the shape of a polygon, trefoil, cross, star, diamond or other geometric shape;
• "manrikigusari" or "kusari", and any similar instrument or device, being hexagonal or other geometrically shaped hard weights or hand grips linked by a length or lengths of rope, cord, wire or chain;
• any finger ring that has one or more blades or sharp objects that are capable of being projected from the surface of the ring.
• "crossbow", with a stock of 400 mm or less
• "Constant Companion", being a belt containing a blade capable of being withdrawn from the belt, with the buckle of the belt forming a handle for the blade
• any knife commonly known as a "push-dagger" that is designed in such a fashion that the handle is placed perpendicular to the main cutting edge of the blade; and any other similar device but not including the aboriginal "ulu" knife.
• "Spiked Wristband", being a wristband to which a spike or blade is affixed; and any other similar device
• "Yaqua Blowgun", being a tube or pipe designed for the purpose of shooting arrows or darts by the breath; and any other similar device

• "Brass Knuckles" and any similar device consisting of a band of metal with finger holes designed to fit over the root knuckles of the hand.
• Any device designed to be used for the purpose of injuring, immobilising or otherwise incapacitating any person by the discharge therefrom of

High-power rifles, swords, full-scale crossbows, and arguably the best in the world assault rifle Tavor are OK.

Porterhouse steaks and Bratwurst should be finger food! Knives with even a somewhat sharp edge threaten our sacred children and house pets! You right wing nut-jobs!

Fingernail inspection will commence in Picadilly Circus promptly at 0600.

Any nail protruding beyond the end of the finger will be deem an offensive weapon and the offender will be sent to the tower of London wherest he or she will place their head on a chopping block and be struck on the back of the neck by an "air-sword" wielded by an understrength Yeoman!

It seems very obvious to me that the real point (no pun, lol) is that these global elitist one worlders have a very different agenda than "disarming criminals"---its really to disarm freedom loving, intelligent citizens, to prevent them from having any effective means of resisting the One World Disorder. We all know that criminals dont obey gun laws or any other laws, and that they are cowards, afraid to rob anyone they know is armed and able to defend themselves.
The REAL agenda here is to take away the means of self-defense and effective opposition to the NWO from concerned citizens who want no part of the NWO.

Unfortunately, the British government has recently proposed a ban on knives. It claimed that knives make those who carry them unsafe. That's untrue, of course.
No one would wander around England with a label saying 'I'm an unarmed person', because criminals prefer unarmed victims.
No one would put a sign saying 'This is a weapons-free home' in front of their home, because criminals prefer unarmed victims.

I just can't stop laughing at the stupidity of this knife-banning attempt. In Japan(which has very strict gun laws) not so long ago, there was a murder resulting from a road rage incident. One driver stabbed the other driver to death - with the sharpened point of an umbrella.

The justification for banning guns in England was that knives were less dangerous and therefore less objectionable -- so the replacement of gun crime with knife crime was the plan all along. It's hypocritical for them to start complaining about it now.

If they had wanted to cut back on murder and other violent crimes in general, they should have gone after violent _criminals_ from the beginning -- and not wasted their time on gun control.

Since gun control has worked so well, I am sure there will be no more stabbings in the UK, henceforth.

BTW, Canute had better luck with the tides, Limeys. Welcome to the jungle, mates. You brought it onto yourself by "muddling through".

No surprise the UK populatin is growing only through high immigration and immigrant birth rates. Those offset the UK citizens punching out.

Unfortunately, something overlooked here in all the comments is that after the Great Gun Ban, Britain's violent crime rate has risen steadily, and criminal use of handguns rose 40% in the two years following the ban. In fact, to this day, Britain is considered to be one of the most violent urban societies in the western world, with a crime rate significantly exceeding the per capita rate in America (the home of the "gun culture"). And these facts were reported by none other than Dan Rather and the BBC, two of the most liberal entities ever in the "news".
People like to compare America and Japan for violent crime rates and illegal firearm use, but this is truly apples and oranges. The cultures are so dissimilar and Japan has never, in thousands of years, had an armed populace. Now, comparing England and America is a more conclusive comparison as to the effects of gun bans. And America and Australia can also be compared favorably. Both countries, with similar cultures, have vastly outpaced America's violent crime rates, and all this AFTER banning guns.
And these comparisons are necessary only if one completely ignores city by city comparisons within the US that clearly demonstrate the fallacy of the claims that gun bans reduce crime.
The entire gun ban scheme is nothing more than a vast pool of ignorant or misinformed masses lead by agenda driven elitists. You won't find many (or any) highly vocal anti-gun politicians or celebrities who don't themselves have some form of armed protection, be it guards or weapons of their own. I have spoken with many people who are adamantly opposed to private gun ownership, and almost without fail, these people know virtually nothing about guns, have never even touched a gun, and can only regurgitate gun-ban propaganda. And the more discredited the propaganda, the louder it is spouted by these ignorant morons.
I used to feel that the rhetoric about defending our nation from tyranny was a bit over the top, but the way the leftists have been acting for some time now, forcing their "values" down American's throats regardless of our wishes, I'm not so sure the vehement pro-gun advocates weren't right all along. A government takeover and the turning of America into some Orwellian nightmare isn't so far-fetched anymore...

To make sure that only the right people are able to own and use knifes, there should be background checks, waiting periods, and safe storage requirements. Purchase and ownership will require permits issued by the government. As in america, anti-knife politicians, political cronies, rich and famous are guaranteed a permit.

LOL, it is true. I just came across a BBC story that advocates stopping sales of pointy kitchen knives.
