Another disaster for 'compassionate' liberalism

Thomas Lifson
It seemed like such a good idea to the liberals in Seattle: let's have automated, graffiti-resistant toilets for the homeless. So what if it cost about a million bucks apiece for five of the German-made high tech water closets! People deserve the right to live on the streets, so we must help them avoid urination and defecation right on the sidewalks.

But in Seattle, as in San Francisco where a similar scheme was put in place, but requiriring a 25 cent fee, the toilets
ended up being used for drug deals, prostitution, and other nefarious activities. So AP is reporting that Seattle is auctioning off the toilets on ebay, with a starting bid of $89,000

Is anyone surprised that as of posting time, nobody has bothered to bid?

From 1M to 89K: another casualty of the real estate market collapse. The good people of Seattle were duped by unscrupulous mortgage lenders, George Bush, and Halliburton. On the bright side, someone looking for a bargain could call it a fixer-upper.

Several years ago I built equipment for Seattle City Light. They were just starting to put a big push into a diversity hiring program. On the last machine I trained their operators there was a Black an Oriental a woman, a Native American and An Irish American (judging from his last name and he was the only long time employee). The new line truck had a special rest room at an assitional cost of $50,000 for the woman, specail radio and head sets for the Indian etc. The old time people prided themselves on getting power restore in 4 hours, the new diverse generation 4 days.

I grew up and attended college in Seattle. It is Kookville, USA with the Fremont district having a statue of Lenin. This does not surprise me in the slightest, last time I went back to visit the waterfront park smelled like urine from the homeless bums sleeping on the benches and we ended up leaving because it was so disgusting.
What is even more typical is the spending of a million dollars on a stupid toilet. You could put 3000 sani-cans there for that. Remember, liberals never have to get results with our money, it is only the good intentions that count.

I'm surprised they are getting rid of them. I'd have thought that they would now need to build places for the various crimes to take place safely.

The Lenin statue is just a joke, proof positive that our grim and bloated city government had nothing to do with it.
There is another obnoxious policy in full swing: Hizzoner's favorite toys (other than the electorate), streetcars. The city is spending two million apiece, never mentioning that this is $1.2 million more than a regular bus. This is the kind of crap that happens in our single-party regime.

Isn't it interesting that liberal plans to help the homeless nearly always are aimed at making it more comfortable for them to continue living on the street and almost never at finding ways to get them off the street. It makes perfect sense, of course, when you their aim is never to actually aid the "victims of oppression" they're always running to the aid of, but to maintain and expand the tally of said "victims", because they represent the main pillar of support for their political power.

I work for the city of San Francisco. Rational people in SF long ago realized that the Decaux toilets were a waste of time for actual people while providing an instant trick room for drug addicts and whores. Yet, SF still has them. No rational being would dare set foot in them. When will people realize that "services" for "the homeless" are mostly a waste of time and money? Want to help "the homeless"? Refuse the give them money, either from yourself or your taxes. Tell them to shape up or ship out, and make it clear that you are on to the scam and will not be a part of it. Run them out of your neighborhood and out of your business. Dysfunctional behavior should never be rewarded. Ever.

Just more proof that Democrat and Seattle politics are in the crapper.

Just more proof that Democrat and Seattle politics are in the crapper.

Jesus, how do these people keep getting away with this insanity?

When are we going to finally say enough time has been devoted to letting the inmates run the asylum and turn it back over to the grownups? (If there are any grownups left by the time we come to our senses...)

Didn't San Francisco liberals propose to name the regionial Sewer Treatment Plant after President Bush? I think that would be an honor because he has had to deal with liberal crap and clean it up for years and has done a remarkable job.

Yes Scott, I'd say that if the homeless person does not want to get off the street but to continue to beg, run them out of the area. Otherwise lets "teach them to fish", so to speak so that they can get off the street. Let's not be enablers to the homeless.

How many people started out with only a few dollars in their pockets and rose to middle class or millionaire? So wouldn't the homeless been better off (and the taxpayers less poor) if Seattle gave 1,000 homeless a grand a piece, instead of toilets, and said here's your chance to get off the ground and make a life for yourself? Invest wisely, work hard and persevere, my good man, and in time you will...who the hell am I kidding.

Are you sh****g me?

Any peoples who elect the likes of McDermott to the senate deserve to live in the smelly environment they are in.

I was born in Seattle and lived in the SF Bay area (though not the city) for years. I wouldn't go back to either even if someone else paid my expenses.

Seattle is now North San Francisco. They are joined at the hip.

Liberals and the homeless they love have destroyed both cities. The downtown areas of both, once beautiful, are literally now toilets, overrun with the filth and odor of ubiquitous human bodily discharges.
