So writes our contributor Paul Jackson in his Calgary Sun column. He's been talking with the US ambassador to Canada. Sometimes, a little distance from the day-to-day political struggle helps clarify matters.
President George W. Bush is going to persevere and prevail in beating world terrorism and bringing stable democracies to both Afghanistan and Iraq.
There will be no wavering and no withdrawal. [....]
Their ignoble cause will fail.
The course of decency and democracy will win.
I surely hope that Paul is correct. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate. But my daily bath in American politics has not made me nearly as optimistic as my friend to the north. Maybe I need a holiday in Canada - say, about June or July.
