December 12, 2006 Twisted progress in women's rights
Although the feminist-left community prefers to remain largely silent about the extreme oppression of women common in several Islamic countries (does anyone remember major feminist organizations praising the freeing of Afghanistan's women from the burka and stoning?), sensible people are appalled at the restrictions placed on their freedom and their inferior legal standing, not to mention charming customs like "honor killing" of daughters and sisters after they have been raped.
But now, progress of a certain sort - a twisted, evil sort - is being made: females are playing a larger role in terror attacks. Apparently the restrictions which mean so much to the devout can be overlooked if murder is in prospect. Paula Boradwell writes in the Boston Globe:
Broadwell also notes:
Yes, indeed. Muslims have a perfect double bind for us infidels: if women wearing what amount to masks and loose clothes are not searched, they are a perfect vehicle for murder. And "vehicle" is all they are, as their humanity means nothing to those using them. But if women are searched, the Religion of Perpetual Outrage has yet another excuse to cry "Islamophobia!"
