A disaster for the British monarchy

Prince Charles is about to do great damage to the British monarchy by coming to the United States to lecture us that we have been too intolerant of Islam.

The Prince of Wales will try to persuade George W Bush and Americans of the merits of Islam this week because he thinks the United States has been too intolerant of the religion since September 11.

The Prince, who leaves on Tuesday for an eight—day tour of the US, has voiced private concerns over America's "confrontational" approach to Muslim countries and its failure to appreciate Islam's strengths. [snip]

Prince Charles, who is about to embark on his first official foreign tour since his marriage to the Duchess of Cornwall, wants Americans — including Mr Bush — to share his fondness for Islam. He has agreed to attend a seminar on religions at Georgetown University, Washington, on Thursday: the only event where he will not be accompanied by the Duchess.

"The seminar will look at how faith groups can alleviate social problems in their community," a royal aide said.

The Prince and Duchess will attend a lunch and dinner with President Bush and his wife, Laura, at the White House on Wednesday.

Prince Charles has done more than any other member of the Royal Family in history to understand Islam. He said in 1994 that when he became Supreme Governor of the Church of England, he would rather be "defender of faiths" than "defender of the faith".

I do hope the Prince will tell the American people of the merits of polygamy, forced sex with slave girls, marriage with prepubescent girls, wife—beating, amputating the hands of thieves, and many other glories of unchanging Islamic law. Most of all, I want him to defend the practice of jihad and dhimmitude, which derive from basic scripture, and which have a horrific history.

The Prince has done more than anyone since Oliver Cromwell to destroy the British monarchy. His visit to scold us will harm the United Kingdom. I expect tourism to decline, and for Americans to react very badly. We have bent over backwards to be accommodating to Muslims, with the President repeatedly praising Islam as a great religion.

As the longer term consequences unfold, the prince will find himself the object of even more scorn by his mother. May he never wear the crown. Long live the future King Andrew!

UPDATE: Bookworm links to a Daniel Pipes post suggesting that prince Charles may be a secret convert to Islam. The evidence is spotty, indeed, so it is somewhat far—fetched at present. But as Bookworm notes:

His namesake, King Charles II, was a secret convert to Catholicism, something he revealed only on his deathbed.

Many conservatives revere monarchy as a living embodiment of tradition. But when a monarch or (future presumptive monarch) goes so far off the rails, it raises serious issues. besides, as an American I find hereditary status distinctions repellant. I do not wish to see old customes, like bumping off awkward relatives, revived. Best of all would be a public humiliation from the Queen, perhaps a resignation and naming of Prince Andrew as the next monarch.
