Peru is one of the world's economic bright spots, a poor nation lifting itself out of the mud that can report 37 straight months of economic growth, and an end to one of the worst guerrilla wars ever to plague the South American continent. In no small measure, this is due to the good policies of President Alejandro Toledo of Peru and his predecessors.
But like the U.S., it looks like the better your country, the worse your television reporters. Xinhua reports that some stupid TV journalist named Heidi Grossman presented President Toledo with a "toy bomb" to prove that this is what the Peruvian people would like to give him. What this has to do with democracy, or rule of law, or this country's hard—won peace is a mystery. Fortunately, security officials have taken over the matter from here.
