Freedom's messiah

editorial
Just a little historical perspective on a big idea, freedom & liberty. In 1788, the United States became the world's first largeDemocracy. By 1945, there were approximately 40 Democracies. At the end of the past year, the world was approaching 200 Democracies. So why have more Democracies been created in the last 60 years than in the previous 150 years? US economic, military and political primacy? Perhaps. Or probably more so, the example our Democracy sets for the rest of the world.
Mr. Sumerau's article misses the historical trendof freedom and liberty. Afghanistan may have started down the path to freedom by the force of arms, but like the Ukraine, arrived at freedom's destination by the will of their people. Freedom & liberty are contagious and what America's enemies fear more than our military power.

Andrew Sumereau responds:
We agree that the freedom of mankind is the objective.
The number of democracies in the world at any given time is not the issue. I trust thoughtful readers of The American Thinker will understand that I am most critical of over—reaching, term—limited Chief Executives, and that I hope freedom can and will emerge victorious over time and through our great example if we stay true to the founding principles that have made us great.
