We are living in revolutionary times.  Much of the responsibility for this social ferment is due to the revolution in communications.  This is the glasnost, or openness, that helped to bring down the Soviet Union. At one time, an elite could have almost total control of the dissemination of information.  Millions of people could be intentionally starved to death without media attention.  For decades, three television networks and two major newspapers had a virtual monopoly on the news. The internet has diminished the elite's exclusive control over the flow of information.  They will not tolerate this, and efforts are being made to control alternate sources of information.  The New Year's Eve sexual assault in Cologne, Germany incident revealed the elite's need to control the internet.
