Two ladies from Egypt

Two remarkable ladies demonstrate the endless possibilities Americans enjoy. Ms. Dina Onsi Habib Powell is the White House personnel director, who was appointed recently by President Bush to hold the position of Deputy Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, and Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs. Ms. Laila Ali Hussein is a captain in the United States Navy. Ms. Powell and Ms. Hussein have a few traits in common: they are young, attractive, brilliant, and both are Egyptian American. Their success stories are meaningful and particularly relevant to Arabs like me for several reasons, the first being their gender. There is no need to elaborate on that issue as we are all painfully aware of the status of women in our Arab societies.
