Real Crime vs. Vicious Identity
Since the beginning of the 20th century, advances in science and technology have enabled the most cruel and irrational debris produced by the human mind to be concentrated into the ideological footings of modern totalitarianism. Totalitarianism politicizes every aspect of life: family, religion, education, and culture. As Benito Mussolini exulted, “[e]verything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.”
Worldwide movements to create transnational socialist “new world orders” have been carried out under the banners of communism and Nazism. We are now living through the Obama administration's efforts to transform the constitutionally founded and legally bordered nation-state, the United States of America, into a socialist totalitarian cog in a new world order.
In claiming absolute power and promulgating narratives of intra-national enmity, totalitarian regimes have a history of justifying ideologically driven mass murder of noncombatants. Thus far, the mass murder justified by American totalitarianism obtains in its single-minded emphasis regarding the necessity and righteousness of eliminating many of the unborn.
The pivotal psychological dynamic of totalitarianism is a reorientation of moral and psychosocial attribution of guilt and culpability. The psychology of totalitarianism provides the term “real enmity” to mean being an enemy of society based on voluntary, legally transgressive behavior – i.e., being found guilty of committing a voluntary criminal action. “Objective enmity” occurs when a member of a governmentally non-preferred group is deemed an enemy of society because he is suspected of thinking unacceptable thoughts or holding unacceptable views.
Hannah Arendt gives the example of the psychological transformation from the attribution of real to objective enmity in Nazism, in which the historical crime of Judaism became the ideologically recognized vice of Jewishness. Historically, Jews had the option of conversion, but in Nazi totalitarianism, the offense derived not from voluntary behaviors such as practicing the rituals of Judaism, but rather from the biosocial state of Jewishness from which there is no escape – Goebbels’s "eternal Jew."
Historically, United States citizens have been held to be guilty of breaking a specific law and punished according to that law. It is theoretically possible to “pay your debt to society” and be cleared. This relates to the only thing that Eric Holder’s Justice Department ever got right. Permanently denying a convicted felon’s voting rights implies debt that can never be paid, in effect moving a convicted felon from real enmity to objective enmity – a permanent change in his state of being. This is not consonant with American justice. The slippery slope of “hate-crime” laws is a new association in which people are guilty of offensive thoughts, words, or presumed vicious identity.
The case of V. Stiviano and Donald Sterling exemplifies the legal and cultural processes in the new American totalitarian state when a real crime is committed by an “eternal Aryan” against an “eternal Jew.” Stiviano and Sterling had a long-term romantic and sexual relationship. Ms. Stiviano committed the real crime of secretly recording Mr. Sterling in his home. Ironically, Stiviano’s crime was particularly hateful; one can only imagine how much she must have hated Sterling to victimize him in his own bedroom in such a personal, humiliating way. Though she has committed a crime of “real enmity” against society, being of black and Mexican descent, she is today’s state-approved “eternal Aryan.” She will never be charged, and her crime has won her the lucrative tributes of celebrity status.
On the other hand, Donald Sterling, “the eternal Jew,” is the objective enemy of the people. A reeling and outraged commander-in-chief in this time of war used much stronger words against Sterling than the former has ever used against the Taliban, calling the illegal recording a collection of "incredibly offensive racist statements." For his private words, Sterling has been fined millions of dollars, his constitutional right to freedom of assembly has been suspended, and he is resisting the forced liquidation of his own property. All for non-criminal thought offenses.
V. Stiviano was recently struck in the face in New York City. She later identified the assailant in a police line-up. Among other charges, the alleged assailant has been charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime. New York City cops do not organize a line-up every time somebody gets smacked in the kisser, but Ms. Stiviano enjoys a special innocence of her real crimes and a special victim status because of her race. Also, anti-Italian slurs against the alleged perpetrator will not be investigated as a hate crime, because Italian-Americans never made the government’s approved minority list.
A significant but largely overlooked example of the psychological shift this country is undergoing was Governor Jeb Bush’s recent justification of the invasion by thousands of foreigners as not really criminal, but acts of love. These mainly young, healthy people have a moral obligation to carry forward a revolution in their own countries. But in the new world order, and the totalitarian retrogression of the United States, Mr. Bush’s maudlin assumptions about the states of mind of invaders are more important than the rule of law. Mr. Bush is not likely to make a major speech regarding family love felt by Christians whose children are being murdered around the world. Nor will the borders be thrown open to offer asylum to the non-preferred biosocial groups, Christians and Jews, who are being persecuted in other countries.
In his first inaugural address in 1801, Thomas Jefferson said, “All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression." How strange that his admonition has been turned upside-down.
