Youth on a Downward Spiral

A two-year-old sitting next to his new sister's infant seat decides to poke the baby in the eye. The baby shrieks, mommy comes running and sees her bigger darling intentionally hurt her baby! She takes his hand and spanks it.

The doorbell rings, enter a social worker from CPS just in time to see the three-year-old break into loud sobs. She's outraged! How can a mother spank a child? This is barbarism! She calls the police, mama is removed to jail, the two-year-old boy and his baby sister are placed in foster care where the new mommy doesn't give a hoot for them. This is not the first time government intrusion has hurt these two innocent kids and it won't be the last.

The new mommy is a single teenage girl who just gave birth to her second child while on Social Services. Like many girls today even in elementary school, she looked at virginity as a disease with an all-too-simple cure. The objective in school wasn't to decide if you would go for college, a trade school, post high school education, or work in a specific field, but to have the best time with the best dates and sexual experiences. To many it seems that these girls went from nursery school to a sexually active life without giving a thought to anything else. Why didn't anyone sit down with them and tell them they were wonderful girls and ask what they wanted to be when they grew up?

Unfortunately, many of them came from single-parent homes just like the ones they are now creating. Their own mothers never had goals and either lived on Social Services or took entry- level jobs to keep bread on the table. They never confided to their daughters that they had squandered what could have been a better life in favor of boyfriends and sexual promiscuity. They never talked to their daughters about goals, hopes, and dreams because those things were ripped from their lives with the first guy to come along and tell them how hot they were.

What about the fathers of these children? How come they didn't marry the mother of their child and try to make a family life with them? Because the fathers came from the same kinds of homes as their girlfriends. Their father remained a nameless, faceless person and anonymous sperm donor. Like the girls they impregnate, no one ever talked to them about goals, the fact they were a good person with a lot to offer and the talent to go far if only they would focus on the future. So they abdicated their responsibility to their own flesh and blood and left their children to perpetuate the cycle of aimlessness, low-paying jobs, and poverty.

How did tragedies like this begin? In the sixties, Civil Rights was a necessary movement. You couldn't treat an entire population like second-class citizens and tolerate this societal prejudice as acceptable. But legislators dedicated to cementing their political careers in perpetuity had other plans for the black population.

While the majority of Americans truly believed there had to be an end to the era of bigotry against blacks, the Democratic Party was busy fighting in Congress to maintain the status quo of blacks being sent to the back of the bus, going to inferior schools, being denied entrance into institutions of higher learning, and being told that blacks weren't welcome in all public places.

Then the Democratic Party woke up and figured if they started cultivating the black vote their party would have a loyal voting bloc for generations. And so it came to pass that the once-bigoted Democrats who fought against Civil Rights began embracing the policies and creating legislation that would endear the black vote to the Democratic Party forever.

Local Democratic governments didn't embrace the minority vote for altruistic reasons, but because of their thirst for power and money. The federal government passed education policies that sent millions back to loyal local and state governments. Bussing was enacted to take black children from their neighborhoods to schools as far as a few hours from their homes. With black kids integrated into formerly segregated classrooms, all three branches of government took credit for the marvelous integration plans. Their goal wasn't to educate, but to indoctrinate the black population into believing that only the Democratic progressives were capable of giving their kids a fair shake. Along with this came the biggest insult to the black mother. She was told that the only way her child would excel in school was if he or she sat next to a white child.

The majority of students in my high school were black. Any person peeking into the doors of honor classes would see lots of black and white faces learning advanced material together. These black students were very goal oriented and came from homes where their parents supported their educational goals. Back then I could probably tell you which black students went on to med school, law school, or some other difficult discipline.

Led by Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democrats didn't embrace Civil Rights out of any feeling of loyalty to black voters. As a senator, Johnson refused to punish those who lynched black men in the South. His "War on Poverty" to benefit black constituents was a purely political move. The black voting bloc became a sacred cow to Democrats who had previously voted to keep blacks in "their place".

In the meantime Democrats joined forces with black Civil Rights activists to enact legislation that would keep the voting bloc loyal through government dependence. Exit the strong black nuclear family and enter the heartbreak we are witnessing today.

Last summer, one mainstream journalist managed to publish a piece about a little black child in Chicago who was shot in the head and found dead next to his bicycle. A black youth started shooting a gun and murdered this innocent child.

If someone in that young man's school had stood in front of a classroom, assembly, or even sat face to face and told him all he could achieve if he would dedicate himself to a positive productive future instead of crime would that child's life have been spared? Would that young man today be looking ahead to working hard in school or a chosen career instead of a life of hell in a jail cell?

With all the money the taxpayer is pouring into education on the federal, state, and local levels does any school have at least one teacher who can stand in front of an assembly or classroom and tell the students they are fine, worthwhile people who deserve the chance to work for a future free from poverty, squalor, and hunger if they would refocus their attention on being a human being deserving of opportunity and the chance to do the work to fulfill their dreams?

How many women today are in a hole they will never emerge from because our schools are telling students everything they ever needed to know about sex but depriving the students of the chance to look at themselves as productive accomplished human beings? Contrary to the progressive elitist mantra, the problem is not race, it's a people issue. Let's start treating our black youth like people and sending those who legislate these kids through a downward cycle of dependency to their own spiral of irrelevance.
