David Sirota: Psychodynamics of the Racist Mind

On April 24, Bill O'Reilly plaintively asked: why does the left wing protect Islamic terrorism and blame America for everything?

Mr. O'Reilly describes himself as a simple guy, so here is a compact answer to his complicated question: Progressives live physically in America for the comfort and security, but mentally, they live in Sodom.

On April 16, one day after the dreadful events on Bolyston Street, David Sirota published an essay in salon.com entitled "Let's hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a white American."  His essay is about "white privilege," a hoax that Sirota himself promotes.  He could not wait until the grieving families had buried their children to start rooting for his favorite form of hate.  He makes an excellent case study of the new American racist, because he is callous and 37 years old -- too young to remember any home but Sodom.

Since birth, David Sirota has been indoctrinated to hate white (Christian) Americans.  He has been taught that they are the most racist people on earth, that all violence in the world -- including Islamic terrorism -- should be blamed on American racism. It feels true and good to him when a heinous crime is committed by a white American.

Like every racist before him, Mr. Sirota's unconscious mind projects hate and blame onto ego- proximate, culturally relevant threats to his self-image.  The irrationality and rage that characterize David Sirota's cohort arise as their minds repress shame, which comes from their shameful values.  Mr. Sirota's culture values two classes of ego-syntonic narcissism, one infantile and the other merely childish.  First, there is the view that gratification of sexual and emotional wants is an affirmative right.  Second, adherents to this culture must not be asked to take risks or make sacrifices for others.  They leave the dangers of protecting America to less subtle minds, and they feel morally and intellectually superior in doing so.

The job of Mr. Sirota's defensive structure is to enable him to feel what a special guy he is while he lives off the courage, sacrifice, and labor of others.  It projects racist hatred toward the white (Christian) American, because that is the ego-proximate mental object that threatens Sirota's narcissistic entitlements and bloated self-satisfaction.

Psychodynamic psychology developed in the late 19th century in part because scientific and technological advancements began to mitigate the problem of getting enough to eat and replaced it with the problem of egoistic anxiety.  Far-reaching changes in material circumstances of Western civilization reduced the necessity of ego-crushing submission to a group in order to survive and turned the focus of life to the problems of individual self-actualization and the removal of anxiety.  Fear arising from the threat of hunger or material deprivation contributes to a different psychology of racism from what one gets from anxiety arising from threats to ego entitlements.  Davis Sirota's racism is the latter.

Freud posited that anxiety results when parents and society repress the instinctual drives of children.  Psychodynamic theory arose in the context of Victorianism, a last-ditch effort to keep 'em down on the farm, moralistically speaking, before all hell broke loose.  According to psychodynamic theory, people develop mental problems when their minds repress thoughts about the bad things.

The burning hatred progressives feel for figures like President Bush and Governor Palin is not mainly because of their politics, but rather because Bush and Palin are ego-proximate cultural archetypes.  At the same time, the Muslim who follows the Koran, with its calls for torture and murder, and who never protests evil done in the name of Islam, is treated with complacency.  The Islamist is ego distantiated and culturally irrelevant, and therefore poses no psychological threat.

In the mind of David Sirota, the bombs of Islamic terrorists will never hurt him.  As for the thousands of Americans who have been killed and maimed, oh well, they are collateral damage in the pursuit of "David Sirotaness."  And anyway, the killing of Americans by terrorists will not stop until America stops being racist (and sexist, homophobic carbon users.)
