Obama, The Left and the National Football LeagueBy Michael Geer
"I'm a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I'd have to think long and hard before I let him play football," President Obama said in an interview with the New Republic.
"In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much."
"I tend to be more worried about college players than NFL players in the sense that the NFL players have a union, they're grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies," he said. "You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about."
One, how is this any business of the President of the United States? Two, incautious commentary is never what it seems out of a Leftist. These utterances signal something altogether different than what it seems on the surface. And third? Demonstrable to 200 decimal points is the truth that the Left not only doesn't give a fig about people, they're actually the political equivalent of the Party of Death. As Ramesh Ponnuru says in his book by the same title, the Left not only represents death and injury it embraces these.
The record? Beginning with Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and the degradation of large segments of our society, we then move to the Left's never ending assault on morality and traits of character, lessons hard won through the millennia. Then comes abortion, the ultimate executioner. Examine the lust for Evolution over a Creator and all manner of evil follows. John Derbyshire termed abortion "a frigid and pitiless dogma." We can examine the immense damage an icon of the Left has accomplished, namely Masters and Johnson's thoroughly discredited study of human sexuality -- still embraced like a fevered lover by the Left. Generations of women have experienced personal ruin and a forever adolescent state of mind because of this "study." It led directly to Helen Gurley Brown transformer of Cosmopolitan into the seminal magazine for chic do-what-thou-will feminism.
The damage that flows from the Left is the full menu, from economic slavery, to hatred of profits, corrupting morality, despising the very institutions and people who clothe them, feed them, make $3,000 titanium bicycles for them, spin Polar Fleece out of chemicals for them. The Left is a collection of brain-addled teenagers forever jacked up on emotions insisting that how they see the world is how the world should work, never stopping to notice the vast swath of carnage they leave behind.
Now, the NFL. Player safety is a propaganda bullet meant to influence the media.
No one wants to see players sustain injuries, no more than auto racing fans attend racing to see wrecks. C'mon. Nor do we want to see spilled blood in the MMA arenas, nor a man killed in a boxing prizefight.
But mature adults also know freedom Is messy. The freedom to make the National Football League a career. The freedom to drive a high performance racing vehicle at 200 mph. The freedom to be the enforcer on a hockey team, knowing you're going to be missing teeth at the end of your career. Freedom is singularly the most important aspect of being human.
Let me say that again so Obama's minions can get what I said ... Freedom is singularly the most important aspect of being human. And Freedom is messy. With consequences.
The Left is terrified of real freedom. Because real freedom carries with it the burden of consequences. Consequences. As in you have to pay the piper.
For the Party of Death consequences is like unto Holy Water to a vampire. After all the Left's mantra is "Move on!" As in, quit bugging me about the damage I've done!" Or, the more adolescent "Shut up!" or, the ever popular Leftist adolescent tag line, "What's it to you?"
The NFL, like the military is no place for amateurs nor social experiments. Rush Limbaugh this past week made a great point when he said "Why don't we force the NFL to accept women down-linemen? A point guard, at least. Why are women denied the opportunity?"
Because the NFL is about the best of the best of the best in a sport where only the most deserving get the chance to play. This is one of the few places left where the attributes of will, preparation, desire, work ethic and intelligence are on display. You either have the stuff or you don't. Downs on the field reveal who's who in damn short order. This is survival of the fittest at it's finest. Americans love it.
So, why is the Left suddenly laser-pointed on football injuries from the NFL down to college, high school and even Pee Wees? Is this yet another slice of America they seek to remake in their image? The image of no-consequence adolescence?
Maybe. Hubris at its zenith is where they're headed. Caligula and Nero are sitting up in Hades and taking notice of the outrageous size of their egos to stamp everything with their image and likeness.
Or, could it be something else? Note my underlining up at the top of this article.
Let's look to Richard Epstein's recent writing on this head injury topic. On the difficulty ahead for players suing for the NFL to compensate them for injuries suffered from making this sport their livelihood, he lists four difficult legal hurdles involved.
And I stop right there and point the damning finger of my analysis.
Demonstrably, the Left and Unions are joined at the hip in a corrupt manner that embraces extortion, violence, thuggery, threats, criminal acts, often the mafia and always the unspoken truths of "Nice business you got. Shame if anything happened to it."
My example? Let's start with Toyota and Starbucks and Jesse Jackson. Shakedown covers his racketeering skills in detail. Al Sharpton, the king of boycotts including Colgate, Chrysler and Macy's. The experience of Sinclair Broadcasting at the hands of the Left's media machine. Even spiritual extortion as explained by former Congressman Thaddeus McCotter. Oh, hell. You know as many of these examples as I do and we're about to witness one of the biggest extortion attempts in the history of our Nation, if not the biggest. Quoting Rahm Emmanuel,
It's the Chicago Way.
My certainty is absolute that in the midst of America's nightmare known as The Chicago Way, bald naked extortion is so commonplace it is now almost unremarkable. The Chicago Way, post-Allinsky, is to bring such pressure of violence, hatred, manipulation of Law and Regulation along with media condemnation, coercion and socially unacceptable sodden emotions that whoever is the target cries Uncle and coughs up the penalty.
Or, don't you remember Big Tobacco and the lesson? The lesson that everyone but the "victims" got paid.
My analysis is that all the heat and noise over head injuries is a set up for the next NFL Players Union Collective Bargaining Agreement wherein Dominque Foxworth and DeMaurice Smith are going to make a media case for forcing NFL Owners to give up more pie. A lot more pie. Maybe the whole pie because as we know from nearly a century of evidence, if owners make any profits the Union movement covets all of it. And will do "whatever it takes" to see to it the rank and file get all of it. The Players Union did just fund a $100 million study with Harvard to, wait, excuse me. Let's get this right. The Players Union made a $100 million grant to Harvard for studying a wide range of potential health issues relative to the sport they engage in. The Players Union unselfishly made this considerable donation out of the pockets of their players for the good of all footballers from PeeWee to college to the Pros.
But since we know the Left embodies The Chicago Way, my mind turns to the only realistic answer why Obama chose to use the bully pulpit of the Executive Office to fire a shot across the bow of the NFL.
Money. Follow The Money.
Plain and simple. If you doubt how deep, intertwined and woven together the interests are of all that is "The Left" go here and marvel. You will wear out before you get even 2% uncovered.
Since Unions are the enforcers of the Left, and their stated and hated enemies are Owners of anything, it stands to reason this early sniping from a safe distance on the PR/Media manufactured "issue" of damaged grown men is just the early testing fire of the war to come. Remember, these are men who are responsible for their own decisions and who've had at minimum two decades' experience to understand the violence of the profession they've chosen. Or as Ed Reed, veteran and celebrated Free safety of the Baltimore Ravens said in an interview about head injuries:
Reed doesn't want any hand wringing. He says explicitly he knows the risks. He sees the potential trouble. He plays. He thinks the sport is a dangerous occupation that the participants enter with eyes wide open. It's not the same as other worker safety situations, from coal mines to factory work.
He elected to take this up as his profession.
"I signed up for this," Reed said. "I knew it was a contact sport. I know there's going to be pain and ailments and injuries. Do I want that to affect my [life]? No. But do I know it's going to affect it? Yes."
That's a man, baby.
Which the Left will never be. You mark my words, this business of head injuries and whatever else gets lumped into the cauldron of Pay Me is a Union looking to get paid far beyond the limits of collective bargaining. That means the Left will get paid. Which ultimately means a large part of the money Union players will spend in this coming battle is being spent to ensure the Democratic Party wets its beak in the Owners' profits. The Left and its Unions have mastered this technique and in consequence you're watching the demise of American professional football because of The Chicago Way.
