Tennis And Politics

I'm meeting with my little tennis group at Sutton East in Manhattan.  About fifteen years ago when we formed, our group was mostly middle aged.  People came and went and now our foursome consists of Jack (90 years old), Ben Gitlow (89 years old) and Jack's wife Eve (late seventies).  We have a couple of other members in their fifties and seventies who are not here today.  I'm almost sixty-five. I used to be ranked in the top thirty in the East Coast but now I'm not so competitive and I love playing with these old codgers.  Somehow all the young people disappeared from our group.

I have to admit that none of them can run well except Eve, but all have good hand-eye coordination and can hit anything that comes near them. Eve and Jack are extreme liberals, taught college and sympathize with socialism/communism.  I like them despite their naïve, well-intentioned humanism. Before the game Ben Gitlow and I step off to the side and chat. Eve and Jack step out onto the court to warm up.

Ben Gitlow's father was the founder of the American Communist Party.  Like his dad, Ben turned against communism and found it a hypocritical destructive force that hid behind its reapportionment of other people's wealth.

"What I don't understand," I say, "is why so many fools support communism when people in communist countries had poor nutrition, had poor medical aid, and lived in miserable conditions.  That's not mentioning that they had few rights and countries like China and Russia eventually killed off millions of their own people."

"The liberals, socialists and communists know how to win the publicity war.  They make their form of 'share the wealth' look good even though it never works," Ben says. "They're like a highly activated public relations firms."

"That's what Obama's doing now.  Women are saying that Romney has a war on women even though Obama has increased women's unemployment. Obama accuses the Republicans of all his sins and then boasts that he is doing things that he is not doing. If women got off their obsession with contraception they might realize that Obama's making them broke and helpless. Obama, not the church, is the reason that women can't afford contraception," I say.

"The Republicans ought to get a junior lecturer (like Obama was in Chicago) to teach them public relations," Ben says.

"Obama has ruined America's credit rating, increased our unemployment, reduced the growth of its GDP to 1.7 per cent, inflated our debt to 16 trillion dollars (more than all the previous presidents combined), decimated our armed forces, dangerously reduced our nuclear weapons, revived class warfare, presided over the falling apart of the Mideast, committed treason about ballistic missiles over the microphone with Medvedev and weakened Israel," I say,. "How could the Democrats still support him?  He is ruining America," I add.

"When he was elected he said that if he didn't bring the unemployment to under 8 per cent he should be a one term president," Ben says.

"He should resign.  He loves that White House.  He can't resist the status and the bling," I say. "He's typical nouveau riche. He just can't stand the thought of losing his limos and the Air Force One."

I hear a voice.  It's Jack yelling over from the tennis court, "Hey, what are you guys talking about. Let's play."

"Keep it quiet," I tell Ben.  "I love them but they're commies."  It's funny saying they're commies to the son of the founder of the American Communist party.

"Who's on whose side?" I ask.

"I'll be on David's side," Eve says.

"She likes to win," her husband, Jack, says.

"So do I," I say, complementing his wife.

And we go out to play.  It's a shame more Americans can't be proud of our tradition of free enterprise. The nanny state is destroying us. I don't blame Obama.  Who wouldn't want to be president?  But all the Democrat fools are profiting by it and promoting liberalism as a new form of socialism.  Obama solicits the food stamp clients for votes.  There are more of them. Obama is their device for their own ideological solipsism. He has made all the Democrats miniature presidents.

The road to hell is paved with the best intentions.  The Democrats are shoveling the concrete that will bury America's tradition of self-reliance.
