June 03, 2008 Phony-Ops build the Obama MythBy James LewisThe biggest Phony-Op of the election season so far was that giant riverfront photo in Portland, Oregon with "the masses" yelling their lungs out, as if for a messianic King. Or at least we may make that sort of association. Archetypal Phony-Ops make for powerful unconscious media manipulation, and there will be a lot of them coming up. So this is a head's up if you don't want to get manipulated by the slick libs of the media. Look at the crowd picture in the NYT on May 19, with Obama the lone speaker on the bunting-draped stand, surrounded by endless adoring throngs of people. "By land and by sea, they came to see the great man speak. An estimated 75,000 in all turned out to see presidential hopeful Barack Obama at Portland's Waterfront Park yesterday afternoon -- a record crowd for Obama's own campaign, according to The New York Times, and a record crowd for Oregon political events, according to The Oregonian. Just look at them all!" How do we know all those Oregonians were there to celebrate a political messiah? Well, (indignantly) why else would 75,000 masses get together in Oregon, just when the media need to let The People know about Our Chosen King? Maybe the tacit message of the photo -- that all those people really, really love the great man -- is true. But just to make sure enough people turned out, as exposed by Newsbusters, the slick Dems put on a free rock concert by the popular Decemberists band for 45 minutes prior to arrival of the Great Man. How many rock fans in Portland, OR, are going to miss that one? The original Decembrists were members of a secret society that started a Russian revolt in 1825. The rock band of that name likes to start its concerts with the national anthem of the Soviet Union. Not one out of a hundred people at that concert know anything about the Decembrists as violent revolutionaries in Russia. The Left just loves to fool us with those sly little puns. It shows how much more they know their Marxism than the American suckers. That's how they are building up Obama today. When they get done with him, Barack Obama will look like young King Aragorn out of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King. The media will show us lots of photos with this archetype. Call it, "The People Greet Their Young King!" Be honest, now, don't you get that little lump in your throat when you see a really basic archetype? Madonna and Child, Bill Clinton marching the US Marines up the West Lawn, The Grateful Masses Welcome their New King Obama? I do. That little lump in my throat tells me --- Uh-oh, I'm being suckered by another Phony-Op! In the infamous Clinton years we saw how Hollywood honchos Harry and Susan Thomason built up Bill Clinton with movie fakery. Anybody else remember the lucky "pebble cross" Bill found on the beach at Normandy? Remember Bill and Hillary dancing in the moonlight, just before the Monica scandal broke? Ever notice any of the media complaining about being used? JRR Tolkien was a wonderful student of myth and story teller. But Professor Tolkien did not love the exploitation of mythology by Nazi propaganda in the 1930s, as he made very clear indeed. Leni Riefenstahl was the "mythic" film propagandist for the Nazis -- and her methods are still being taught in film schools today. Soviet "Socialist Realism" was another big mythology-based propaganda art, and guess what? -- it just showed up again in Obama's campaign. That's what they teach in all the Media Arts schools today, along with the usual Leftist indoctrination. So the media know exactly how to use that kind of image on behalf of the Left. On the other hand, John McCain is already being depicted as a crippled dwarf by nice people like these. Oregon was a Phony-Op, a staged photo-op. The Clintons were masters of the phony-op, in the close coordination with their Hollywood friends. That's how Bill kept his numbers up. But this tactic goes way back. The Czars did it, going back to the year 1500 when the Romanovs Czars came in. So did Julius Caesar more than a thousand years before that -- just check out Shakespeare's play, Act 1, Scene 2, where Caesar is offered the crown by Anthony on behalf of "the people of Rome," but nobly refuses --- only to change his mind later, forced by popular demand. The most famous Russian opera, Boris Godunov, starts out with exactly this scene. Scene: The Kremlin: Crowd of peasants, drawn there by free food and herded by Cossacks with big whips. (True fact: Rock bands like The Decemberists came much later.) The poor people are told that Boris is praying to God for the wisdom to decide whether to accept the crown of All Russias. Poor Mother Russia is suffering and feels lost without a Czar to protect its people. The crowd moans in fear. Then they are literally told to shout, all together now, Hail, Hail, Boris Godunov, our new Czar!! ![]() Boris gives in and accepts the crown. Nothing new about Obama's Phony-Op in Oregon. But we can all get unconsciously manipulated by these archetypal images -- like this one of Obama with a halo from Reuters. So keep a sharp eye out for Phony-Ops. They will be coming at us as regular “news” features until Senator O wins. Then there'll be a lot more over the next four or eight years. But if John McCain wins you won’t see them, just as you haven't seen them with President Bush --- the most media-abused President since Ronald Reagan. Just watch out for that little lump in your throat, the one that tells you, "Haven't I seen this before in Lord of the Rings?" And whatever you do, don't swallow. Comrade Obama knows how to pull them heart strings. If you notice, most revolutionaries are communists, going in, and trying to get out. Never understood why.

It's all about the feeelings, man. Don't harsh their mellow with critical thinking.
Every marketing trick in the book will be thrown at us to sell Obama, including new variations that digital immigrants don't really get.
Like elephants communicating in low frequencies inaudible to human ears, the syndicate selling Obama as their front man will disseminate messages that resonate with digital natives, messages that won't be countered unless McCain has some digital natives of his own who can hear those frequencies.

A hard cold wet winter with multiple snow storms (the Willamette valley usually gets none). The first shirt sleeve weekend of the year sunny and warm. A venue well know for its out door events. That day was the perfect confluence of events.

Ok, I agree with MOST of the article, but I take you to task for using Aragorn and LOTR as a reference to O'Bambi. First of all, Aragorn was not young (forget what you saw in the movie, read the book), but more importantly, Aragorn was a humble man, a strong man, a brave warrior, and a fearsome leader.
O'Bambi isn't any of those things.
And lest you accuse me of giving to much credit to a character in a book, keep in mind that The Lord of the Rings was conceived in the trenches of WW1.
Now if you compared him to Sauruman maybe...

This is a timely article. But I think everyone should know that, according to the Onion, Senator Obama is already aware of the power of the Phony-Op:

The first Romanov was Michael in 1613.

Yes the press will do their best to augment Obama's propaganda with lots of their own; it can already be seen during the primaries. How many times have we heard his complete speeches broadcast, while only snippets of his opponents are played?
Indeed, perhaps their strongest meme will be about some phony passing of the "generational torch"-as it were. This has constantly been discussed by the leftist media; that Obama is drawing an entire new generation into the game-only he can appeal to young people.
This comes as no surprise when you think about it. For the last 20 years (and longer in some areas of the country) our public school system has focused at least as much time and energy on indoctrinating our children-when they should simply be educating them. By inculcating the doctrine of phony multi-culturalism, they have hamstrung them fundamentally with the false precept of moral relativism. Additionally, they have been taught that only through "diversity" will our society ever flourish. Instead of focusing on what used to be called civics, so that they could understand their responsibilities in our representative democracy, they focus on "cultural issues". And forget about a more comprehensive, mainstream view of American history, where you go into more detail as the child gets older; no, teachers instead choose to dwell on episodes of injustice from the past (the horrors of the middle passage and Japanese internment) and stress our "obligations" to the global society. And don't underestimate the level of Bush derangement syndrome that gets passed onto them courtesy of the NEA. So it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that overall they come away from this experience feeling like there is something fundamentally wrong with our country; that it's time for change............
When you add the mass media blitzkrieg to their doctrinaire educational experience, it's clear that our youth are responding to the "dog whistle" tones that they were instilled with over many years. And, they have many more media sources than adults; in addition to the lefty mainstream media they are bombarded by cynical popinjays like Jon Stewart (a shocking number of college students say that his show, a supposed comedic parody, is their prime source of news!). And, don't underestimate the peer pressure brought to bear by the Marxists at MTV; their "rock the vote" propaganda program has been slanted to Obama from the start; c'mon homes, Diddy down wif Obama. Interested parties have created a brand new group of "Obama youth" that can be mustered to intimidate and "shout down" any opposition, whenever necessary; their troops hear and obey the messages received through their crackberrys and instant messaging.
It's ominous how our young people have been essentially taught to wait for the liberal messiah to come transform our mean and unfair nation into a better place. While many of us recoil at the nearly transparent Marxism in Obama's message our youth don't see the problem; they wonder why equality of outcome is a problem-shouldn't everyone who participates get the same trophy regardless of their efforts? Let's hope that these apparent hordes of young comrades are merely another phony-op like the one in Oregon that was exposed in this essay, as well as the nearly empty gym where Obama spoke following his victory in North Carolina that was made to look full by the magic of framing. If we're lucky our youth is hip to the true nature of America and will reject this phony message, and its messenger, in the fall.

As an advertising professional, I am amused that so many of my colleagues are manipulated by the same type of trickery we employ in our own field when hawking cars, soda or deodorant. Image over substance, catchy line that means nothing when pressed--in this case: change, change, change. Since the start of "His" campaign, I, too, began noticing the phony-ops. Interestingly yet not surprisingly, not only from Obama collateral, but from NYTimes, CNN, etc. (or are they one in the same?) Just check out any magazine rack at the newstands and one would think that the rags were selling Obama holy cards as covers. Despite how it pains me to see this overt propaganda work up until now, I do keep hope that America will see through this emptiness and smarten up come November.

I gather you did not like the Clinton years? Or, perhaps you liked the Clinton years but not the guy.
What the Republicans hated the most about Bill Clinton was his willingness to take good ideas from both sides of the spectrum. It infuriated Republicans to see Clinton move along ideas that they themselves had been championing for years.
As for Barack Obama, the attempt to install him is led by George Soros money and Arianna Huffington's hollywood connections.

I think all this phoniness presents opportunity for serious mockings.

If the Onion is satire, what's MSNBC?
I found in asking some young 20 somethings, they don't have a clue what communism is. I think the government schools have done their jobs very well. Explains why Comrade Obama is such an easy sell.

Apparently the hardest domino for Lenin to topple was the USA, because we were free, fat , dumb, happy and a modern military superpower. In his theorizing think tanks with his Bolshevik cronies they came up with the ingenious idea to topple us from within, with a Fifth Column. Through infiltration and subversion. By demonizing Wall St. fat cats as snarling vampires eating the food of the world's poor starving masses. (Whom HE was systematically liquidating by the tens of thousands.) All in reverential keeping with the theoretical doctrines of Blessed St. Karl. The revolutionary purity of Scientific Socialism demands the genocide of resistant counter-revolutionary classes and the cultivation of a new crop of Young Soviet Pioneers. Sauron's Orcs are an apt metaphor.
In the late Sixties the radical New Left criminal bombthrower/assassins submerged into the fertile manure pile of the Chicago Democrats and slept sweetly in their stoned slacker campus pods. Corrupt playgound of Marxist-Mafiosi Saul Alinsky (mentored at the wing-tips of Al Capone's street muscle, Frank Nitti, on how do get the job done 'The Chicago Way') and his venomous political hate doctrines. His sick twisted 'Rules for Radicals' thrilled the rebellious mush brains of O'Bambi and Hitlery.
Well ---the sleeper cell has awakened and their bi-racial, Indonesia raised Messiah is now their candidate for POTUS. He's the sock puppet of all the virulent black and white militant radicals from the South Side. His weird pseudo-Christian 'religion' tells this recovering ex-radical all he needs to know about this dangerous phony. The termites are in the foundation of the dumbed down body politic. Deliberately dumbed down by the likes of 'Distinguished Professors of Education' Ayres and Dohrn. Their infiltration is constitutional and 'legal'. Its why they're all lawyers, educators and journalists. No rational, thinking, educated American would ever consciously vote these creepy maggots into office. They can only ascend by subtly nuanced psychological skullduggery (and total control of the media.)(Green is the new Red!) The money trail leads back to Dr. Evil--- George Soros---gazillionaire enemy of American capitalism (Why Uncle George? Why?) and mad, criminal manipulator of global money markets. When America falls to socialism the next step in the glorious dialectic unfolds---Global Communism. Please notice the stepped up activity of Maoist guerrillas world wide.(They just dethroned the Nepalese monarchy and Shining Path is back in Peru.) They see their glorious victory finally dawning (and there will be blood.)(The red color of their flag is a murderous threat, like the decapitated head of a peasant on a spike in front of Ghengis Khan's yert)(It feeds their weenie pseudo-intellectual cowardice.) Like their Jihadist 'Sputniks' they possess the insidious virtue of infinite Asian patience vs. the endemic ADD of the turbulent Western mind.

...why is this not considered an in-kind political donation by the band? Has no one ever looked to see if these kind of celebrity 'endorsements' violate campaign contribution laws?

Although I agree with the gist of the article, I really don't think the Decemberists could pull in 75,000 people for a show...Even a free show in their home town...Just sayin'

TWO THINGS:
I find distinctively disturbing about Barack Hussein Bin O'BoomBox; a) he is absolutely humorless and pretentiously serious, b) his voice resonates that of a Preacher oration before a numb mesmerized congregation.
Humor and wit touch the human soul; preachiness is shear patronizing and an insult.

So what makes Obama different from past office seekers? He has a campaign operation that utilizes the instruments made available to them. They use the internet to raise money, they use the press, both print and broadcast, to shape their message. He has a good PR machine. His war room is first rate, given that by now he should have been kicked out of the race. The New York Times is an ally. Their coverage reflects it. It's no different from that given most Democratic nominees over the past thirty years.

@ Andrew
Yes, of course I know it's satire. Out of humor often comes truth. Mr. Lewis' column hit the nail on the serious side of the head. The Onion bit ratifies it, and makes one laugh even harder. james' suggestion about serious mocking is noted.

"What the Republicans hated the most about Bill Clinton was his willingness to take good ideas from both sides of the spectrum. It infuriated Republicans to see Clinton move along ideas that they themselves had been championing for years."
Very true.
This is why so many Hillary Clinton supporters will back McCain in the general. They are not Democrats, they are moderates.
After two years of Democratic bungling, the Republicans took Congress in 1994. Bill Clinton became a much more effective President. He signed into law the best ideas of the Republicans while vetoing the worst. In other words, he governed from the center. Whatever you think of the Clinton's personally, his policies were both popular and effective.
In this election, it is McCain who is more likely to govern like Clinton than Obama. Clinton was a Democrat with a Republican Congress. McCain is a Republican who is almost certain to have a Democratic Congress. Like Clinton, McCain is open to working with the other party. I expect McCain to sign into law the best ideas from the Democrats while vetoing the worst. He will govern from the center because he has to.

How can a First term Senator believe he can really be the commander and chief of a military that hates him??
Posted by: Rickk | June 16, 2008 08:00 PM
Rickk...I see no one responded to your question about Obama's Muslim statement. It's not as ourageous as it sounds. Truth be told, he was referring to local, peaceful, neighborhood Muslim families who were rightly nervous about reprisals after 9/11. Some dopey bigot murdered a Sikh gas station owner in Texas for his 'Arabic' appearance. (The Taliban beheaded Sikhs as infidels.) The quote is out of context. He didn't mean or even imply supporting the Global Jihad. He meant ordinary Chicago citizens who happened to be Moslem. He was actually standing up for fairness and justice!
I too was outraged when I first read the quote. My arch-conservative nephew read Obama's book and straightened me out. It's intended to be inflammatory. There's enough real weirdness going on with BHO to get us all righteously peeved! We don't need slick half 'truths' like this in the mix. It's right out of the left's Alinsky playbook. (Hmmm...I smell a rat...planted counter-intel disinformation perhaps?)(...these fools do worship Lenin and Stalin as political geniuses.)(Just sayin')

Obama is just another liar and all this campaign trail BS is just that BS. The fact that people even care the Fergie shows up to his rallys etc is hilarious. Americans are morons.
