June 09, 2008 O, Stalinoid CanadaBy James LewisIf you want to look ahead to the United States under Barack Obama and an expanded Congressional majority for the Democrats, consider Canada. Canada's greatest gift to the contemporary world of letters --- Mark Steyn --- is being persecuted for free speech in his home country. Columnist Steyn is being hauled before something called the "Canada Human Rights Tribunal," a parallel legal system to the normal Canadian courts, without all the bother of due process, the presumption of innocence, a defined and limited legal venue, and protection for free speech. Four Muslim law students complained about Steyn for accurately quoting Norway's infamous Mullah Krekar, a Kurdish mujaheed who has been twisting his Norwegian hosts around his little finger for years. You see, Norway can't deport a fraudulent asylum seeker if he is subject to the death penalty back home --- no matter how many innocent people he's blown to bits back in Kurdistan. It's just an invitation for killer mujahedeen to enjoy Norway's free hospitality forever, and Mullah Krekar has been taking full advantage of it. Said Mullah Krekar to a Norwegian newspaper:
Steyn quoted Krekar in Canada's McLean's Magazine and both are now getting sued for reproducing Krekar saying that "the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes." Thus Muslims are using the PC Police to accuse Mark Steyn of repeating what a Muslim agitator said. Telling the truth is no defense. In Canada it's a basic human right not to have your malignant heroes quoted against you. Thus are human rights twisted into their opposites. Forget the Spanish Inquisition. They're so five centuries ago. Today Canada's Stalinoids can simply punish people for speaking their minds. The Left rediscovered its Stalinist roots in the 1970s when the Boomer brigade conquered the culture. That's when Canada's farcical "Human Rights Tribunals" were created. Today, eighty percent of American college campuses have speech codes prohibiting politically incorrect speech. The ghost of Stalin stalks the earth, looking remarkably healthy. As Mark Steyn tells it no one has ever been cleared by the Canadian Inquisition over the last 30 years. If you're accused, you get hanged. Say something critical about gays or Muslims north of the border, and you can be fined or made to pay your accusers for damages to their precious psyches. Write your criticism on a blog, even one based in the United States, and yes, you can be nailed in Canada. Touching, ain't it? Want Shari'a law in your neighborhood? The Left has laid the foundations. They are allied with Islamists in Europe, Canada and the United States, simply by adding "Muslims" to all the victim groups with the right to persecute public critics. In Britain an arrest warrant has just been issued for blogger Lionheart for telling the world about Islamists in his neighborhood. Unfortunately it's not rare. The Stalinoid plague has spread all over the United States and Europe. Our media constantly stamp out critics of the Left. We don't throw people in jail yet, but you can lose your job for saying the wrong words. Your reputation can be ruined. You can be bullied and harassed. Canada's national anthem, O Canada, has the words
But that was sooo yesterday. James Lewis blogs at dangeroustimes.wordpress.com

How long before we, who comment and contribute, are "tried, convicted and sentenced?" Scarrrrry!!!

Once again life imitates art. This sounds a lot like the satirical takeover of Canada by Saddam Hussein in the low humor cartoon South Park (Episode 201, "Not without My Anus" http://www.southparkstudios.com/guide/201/); the principal differences are: 1) the Canadians are doing this to themselves; and 2) it's very real.
Obama's supporters are already denoucing critics of his politics as "racists" without bothering to mention that they have debased the meaning of the word to encompass opposition to socialism, the natural consequence of the Left's classic method of ending arguments by invoking racism passing into the larger society. This usage is obviously based on the Old Left fetishization of blacks as a "revolutionary class"--criticism of blacks was tantamount to opposing the Revolution.
It's not hard to imagine that with a Democratic Congress and a couple of Supreme Court appointments criticism of President Obama's bound-to-be-feckless policies will be criminalized as "hate speech."

This sad episode in a proud democracy's history is a simple result of government being allowed to work in secret. Government MUST be watched! Britain is a CCTV nation now but those cameras aren't catching the terrorists. Each of us must become part of the video vigilante group that takes back our land from those that would oppress us in the name of homeland security. No committee of Stalinists would dare attack Steyn on the flimsy evidence of a law student from another region were their meetings subject to video review. It must be so to save our freedoms.

While it is certainly true that things will get worse with the dems in control, I would like to point out that John McCain is no friend of free speech either. And that is the truly disheartening aspect of the election. No one running is for freedom.

I don't suppose Christians are on the list of protected victim groups. Didn't think so.

Fellow citizens you need to reread the Declaration of Independence and thank the good lord above we still have the means in the 2nd amendment to draw a line in the sand. If we loose that we are finished as a free nation thanks to the PC-PLS (Progressive Liberal Socialist) and other worthless scum among us.

Canada has a parliamentary system. Its leader is part of the legislature and the majority party carries the day.
While hardly immune, the US system of government is less prone to such swings. For instance, it would take a 60-seat majority in the Senate before Obama's programs could be pushed through. Even then, party affiliation is no guarantee of support. Jimmy Carter had less than full support from the majority Democrats. Bill Clinton tried to give us universal health care and the Democrats lost their congressional majority just two years later, a majority they had held in both houses for at least thirty four of the prior forty years. Given that most members of Congress will face the voters again in 2010, I expect Democrats in Congress to be more cognizant of their constituents' opinions and to vote accordingly, in order to prevent a repeat of 1994.

@Jeffry Pages
Jeffrey, can you cite even one example of discrimination against Muslims in the US?
Posted by: Ed | June 9, 2008 12:00 PM
its my personal right to be bigotted and discriminate, especially against leftist america haters like that canadian lover under me! eat it canada!

I'd like to point out that when I've commented here before, I've been vet conscious that the right words viewed by the wrong person could quite feasibly ruin my business and my "reputation". The author is correct, we are not yet put in jail for our dissent with the public hysteria, but the defamation that can and does occur as a result of it, is both precursor to it, and effective method of accomplishing the same thing. While I have not yet been accosted by Walmart or Halliburton demanding money or my life, I *am* far more conscious of who, what, and where I state anything relating to the political climate around. Now *thats* Stalinism.

Any American that wants to emulate Canada is in serious need of a slap up side the head. I am Canadian, repatriated to my country after working abroad for a number of years. How it has changed! Health care is the worst I have ever seen (access wise) copmared to every country I have lived in or visited. Free speech and the PC crowd have people so scared, no one says what they want to say for fear of the "Human Rights Tribunals" etc., the global warming crowd is only inches away from destroying our economy with punitive taxes, shutting down our oil production and mandating "green" laws; I could go on and on! If you think Canada is bad, I cant wait to see how many of you will be thinking Canada aint such a bad place after Obama become POTUS! He makes Canada's socialist ideology look like we are right wing extremists! THATS SCARY!!!

Jeffrey: "We in the US so discriminate agains't Muslims, who are peace-loving and really nice people! "
I will try to keep this in mind next time they threaten to blow something up or nuke Israel. Why, silly me, only right wing Christian hate mongers are to be feared. You just never know when those naughty Christians will invoke another Crusade..

Ed @Jeffry Pages -
This is what happens when people dont use emoticons.
Jeffry's was a LOL comment -- at least this is what happened to me when I read it -- but you took it at its face value. People don't necessarily get jokes spoken with a straight face. A ;-) was certainly in order...

Canada is an officially bigoted state suffering under the British Crown.
"A Roman Catholic is specifically excluded"

When her majesty wants to oppress or suppress one thing, and patronize and kowtow to another, then her toadies get to work oppressing, suppressing, patronizing and kowtowing.
It's so Middle Ages.

I think that entry from jeffry pages was his last gasp after downing the "kool-aid"

I am a Canadian, and I've been following this and previous stories with great interest. It's huge! You are right, they are appointed and unaccountable to the people. They are overstepping boundries and (thankfully) gaining more and more press as this goes along. It is getting the media spotlight on it, and people are starting to pay attention. But, the pendulum must swing both ways to find its balance (I like to think/hope), and I think thats exactly where we - as Canadians - are right now.
We are most often a soft, almost inaudible voice up here, but we are working through this. It is not a force cascading down the hill just yet, and no...we would not need a 2nd amendment to ensure that this gets made right. We survive and cherish this great country of ours, and are not about to give it up to those who would remove the notion of freedom from Canada!
P.S. Not to worry! Jay is on the job. ;)

This country is about to take a "hard left" if Obama is elected. I can't believe America is so naive to believe he and his party are going to make this country a better place to live. True political repression in this country is not that far-off. Barnum had it right..."no one has ever gone broke underestimating the American public.
Maybe it's time to pack our bags.

Anyone hear of the "Fairness Doctrine"? If Obama gets to the Whitehouse, with a Dem House and Senate, there's a strong likelihood we'll see it before the end of the decade. I suspect an expansion of "hate crimes" legislation into areas of speech will follow soon thereafter. Although I would not have thought it possible even a year ago, it seems almost inevitable should the Dems attain the power they seek. I don't think we can overestimate the danger we now face and the extent of the threat to our existence as a free people.

Jeffry Pages,
I really do think you should use emoticons to indicate a joke. Else, people with no sense of humor will take your posts for genuine rant -- and you for a jerk. They are not that hard to learn...

Jeffry Pages, so when are you moving to Canada? You shouldn't want to live in such a country as the US!
Your comments are so off the wall! When did you convert to Islam?
Posted by: pmk | June 10, 2008 12:38 PM
As a Canadian I can only say that its a sad day. It seems as if Mark Steyn's thesis is correct and America will be Alone.
Posted by: RM | June 10, 2008 02:15 PM
Like Norway Canada "can't deport a fraudulent asylum seeker if he is subject to the death penalty back home" either. They'll even get the worst health care my taxes could pay for.

Why call it "stalinoid?' oid conveys "tending towards." In point of fact this is Stalinism, not quite yet with the bullet in the brain delivered in the cellars of the Lubianka; but still, the tribunals in Canada are STALINIST!!

It is surprising that none has recognized that Jeffry Pages fella as a typical Troll, a character very common on many blogs - his only intent is to post something utterly provocative and laugh seeing how other bloggers take his statements seriously.
Just ignore him and he will migrate to another blog.

To Bluto: Your post reads as if you're Canadian. I am too. Don't you get it?? I'm a Jew and what you just posted could get you dragged up in front of an HRC!! No wonder you don't post your real name. Or, maybe that's why you haven't. Do it, c'mon, I dare you.
Posted by: lhamm | June 11, 2008 07:01 PM
Why do we accept the premise implicit in the term "hate speech," which means that some expressions are deemed to convey hate. Who then determines what words are imbued with hate? Words so designated are effectively removed from our vocabulary, thereby limiting free expression.

What is very unnerving to me is that G.W. Bush's Patriot Act, which the leftists howl about, may be their greatest tool ever to weed out any "hatespeakers". Bush may have unwittingly provided them with the infastruture to undermine everyhting he desperately is trying to protect. Talk about Stalinistic, what would Stalin Himself done had he had this sort of system in place? It makes the KGB and the Stasi look like rank amateurs. I liked the Act when it passed, but the Framers worded the Fourth Amendment the way they did for a reason. And even with good intentions it was a mistake to push that line.

Ed,
I'm sure Jeffrey will claim bigotry against muslims when BHO does *not* get elected. (I predict by a landslide!)
For a country so attacked physically, politcally, mentally by a religion claiming peace, I cannot imagine that we would put a muslim into office. That should smack in the face of every American.

Well, it is clear the HRC functions from a position of fear of the radicals, they have known for decades what Steyn wrote about in his book, and McLean's excerpt published. They seem to be like a frail woman, who although aware of the horror, would rather noone mention it. So they make their laws of censorship so that noone can possibly remind them what lurks in their never accessed knowledge banks. To do this, they acquire friendship with the very lying and connivving forces they hoped to forget about, pretend they are really poor victims of opression and living in fear, then award them some money as they censor the truth, all the while lying themselves to all within earshot.
I've heard the expressions "bury your head in the sand" and "can't we all just get along" before, but this is ridiculous.
It is also clear that to stop this ridiculous charade, they will have to become aware of a new threat, one they created, by their one sided, racist, bigotted, and politically correct fearful censorship.
When their fear of retaliation from the truth tellers rises up to meet their fear of their lying appeased frenemy, then of course they will have to change, again.
Of course Islamic censors won't attack them, so long as they do their will and erode and destroy free speech. Once again, the only counter measure is just as forceful an attack from the free speech side.
Take their jobs away, take their home and cars away, take everything you can from them, threaten it attempt to carry it out, and if some wild eyed free speech freak attacks, well, they asked for it.
Only in this fashion will the tyranny be forced to shrink in fear in another direction, and if a miracle alights, actually reconsider their own wilting daisy stupidity.
Good luck! Their legal demand to kill them with kindness is quite expensive and humiliating, and only reinforces their fearful power slam upon the just.
It's a very, very bad situation. I have no doubt common sense is no weapon whatsoever, and fear is of course, as we well know, what drives their pathetic insanities.
Time to issue your redress, the main body of which should be a pile of fear so great they will sweat and lie awake nightly, wondering what they have gotten themselves into this time. Certainly that is the very reason they are acting like such infantile rubes already.
